Elaine Clapper Functional Ceramics

All my ceramic pieces are functional stoneware. They are one of a kind, created on the potters wheel or from slabs. Each piece is safe for microwave, dishwasher and oven. They are meant to be used, loved and displayed.

Elaine Clapper, artist

Art has always been a part of my life. After teaching art for 32 years, which I thoroughly enjoyed, it was time for me to enjoy my own studio. I am a 1976 art education graduate of Bowling Green State University, Ohio, earning my masters degree from the Ohio State University in 1988. In 2013 I retired from my teaching position  (Lexington High School), of more than 20 years. Teaching high school art allowed me to teach mediums on the opposite ends of the art spectrum. I taught ceramics as well as digital art with Adobe Photoshop - "mother earth and cyber space"  Both areas are still personal passions.  I thank all my students over the years for sharing their creativity over the years. My teaching experience has strengthened my passion and skills with my own artwork.

Although the majority of my work is wheel thrown, I have recently included some slab work in my studio.  I work with stoneware clay, bisque fired to cone 04 and glazed fired to cone 5. The glaze is most often dipped and layered.  All pieces are functional - dishwasher safe, microwave safe, safe for dinnerware.  My intention is that all of my pieces be visually and gracefully pleasing as well as functional. It is my hope that customers will enjoy my ceramic artwork in their homes as much as I have enjoyed creating each piece.
